The Manship House Museum showcases the daily
life of a nineteenth-century Mississippi family through their house.
Until its acquisition by the state in the mid-70s, the Manship House
had been continuously occupied by members of the Manship family
since its construction in 1857.
The restoration of the historical landmark by
the Mississippi Department of Archives and History is based on archaeological,
architectural, and historical research. Excavations on the site
determined structural details and located the foundation of a kitchen
outbuilding. Photographs, diaries, letters, contemporary newspapers,
and recollections of family members supplied information on interior
details. The Manship House Museum offers a unique and personal journey
to Mississippi days gone by.
